Air Quality Index for Shanghai Expo under AirNOW International

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) AIRNow program provides real-time and forecasted air quality information and notification to the public and has grown to be America’s primary air quality information resource since 1997.

The AirNOW-International program is now expanded to Shanghai and piloted as the first city in China to run the software, to have this state-of-the-art air quality notification and forecasting system. The Shanghai AIRNow-International Initiative is a collaborative project between the U.S. EPA and the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau (SEPB) and its Monitoring Center (SEMC) to develop and install the AIRNow-International system for the 2010 World Expo.

Products from AIRNow-International can be used to inform decision makers, health organizations, and the public about air quality conditions. The theme of the 2010 World Expo is “Better city – better life.” Having an air quality notification system that communicates current and forecasted air quality conditions to decision makers, citizens, and visitors is vital to promoting a “Better city – better life” in Shanghai.
